The form a finisher reaches for when they want to control the refining themselves, or when they want to work the shellac in its closest-to-source state.

Seedlac is what the cottage producers start with before turning it into button or flake. Working with it is more involved — practitioners typically dissolve, filter, and prepare it themselves — but the reward is a shellac that has not been reduced or simplified by industrial processing.
