Shipping & Returns

Shellac is a natural material. How and when it ships matters — especially for the dewaxed grades.

Where we ship from

Orders ship from our fulfillment partner in Virginia.

Turnaround

Most orders move from order to label in one to two business days. Tracking is sent automatically by email when the label prints. If something gets held up — a back-ordered grade, a packaging question on a large order — we will reach out and tell you where it stands.

Carriers

Most orders ship via USPS or UPS — we route by what gets the package to you fastest and most economically. International orders ship UPS. If you have a carrier preference, note it at checkout or send us an email — we will work with you on it.

Shipping windows for shellac

Wax-containing shellac (button lac, seedlac, wax-containing flake) ships without issue year-round. The natural wax content prevents heat-induced blocking during transit.

Dewaxed shellac is more sensitive to heat. In warm weather, dewaxed flake can soften and clump together in transit — what the trade calls “blocking” — usually after sitting on a hot porch in the sun or stalled in a hot delivery truck. The good news: blocking does not affect performance. A blocked dewaxed flake dissolves in alcohol exactly the same as an unblocked one. It just looks like clumps in the bag instead of loose flakes.

This is true of dewaxed shellac from any supplier — most stores just don’t mention it. We would rather you order with eyes open: in summer, expect that a hot week or a slow truck might leave you with some clumping. If you would rather not roll the dice, the coolest shipping window runs November through February. Either way, the shellac works the same.

International shipping

We ship internationally via UPS. Duties, taxes, brokerage fees, and any import documentation are set by the destination country and land on the receiving end. For large international orders, email us first — we can confirm rates, packaging, and customs paperwork before the order goes in.

Returns

We want you working with material you’re happy with. If something arrived wrong, damaged, or different from what you ordered, email us at support@shellac.net and we will work it out. Returns are handled by a person reading the email and writing back — no RMA portal, no ticket numbers.

Unopened material in original packaging is refundable within thirty days of receipt. If there is a problem with the material itself — wrong grade, contaminated batch, anything that reads as off when you open the bag — tell us and we will make it right whether the bag is opened or not.
